Is A Level Physics Hard?
Created:Updated: 14-August-2025
A Level Physics has a reputation for being tough — but with the right approach, it’s absolutely achievable.
If you’re studying AQA A Level Physics (7408) with us (or planning to), here’s what “hard” really means and how to set yourself up to succeed.
Why A Level Physics Feels Hard
- Maths load: You’ll use algebra, rearranging formulae, trigonometry, vectors and logs/exponentials across the course.
- Abstract models: Fields, waves and quantum ideas require careful conceptual thinking.
- Multi-step problems: Questions often blend multiple topics and expect clear, logical reasoning.
- Data & practical skills: Uncertainties, gradients, intercepts and evaluating methods are frequent marks.
- Synoptic assessment: Later papers draw on ideas from the whole course.
Do I Need A Level Maths?
You can take Physics without A Level Maths, but many Physics/Engineering degrees require or prefer it. At minimum, you’ll need strong GCSE maths. Do I need A Level Maths to study Physics at university?

How to Make Physics Manageable
- Master the formulae: Know what each symbol means and the units. Practise deriving and rearranging.
- Use worked examples: Identify knowns, select a model/equation, substitute carefully, and check units.
- Drill graphs & data: Gradients, intercepts, proportionality and percentage/absolute uncertainties.
- Practise little and often: Short daily problem sets beat occasional long sessions.
- Mark-scheme language: Study past papers and mirror the phrasing examiners reward.

What About the Practical Endorsement?
The endorsement is separate from your exam grade but required/expected by many STEM degrees. Private candidates must arrange it with a centre; places are limited, so plan early. Practical endorsement guide · AQA required practicals (private candidates)
Common Questions
Is Physics harder than Chemistry or Biology?
It depends on your strengths. Physics is more maths-heavy; if you enjoy equations and modelling, you may find it more straightforward.
Can I do Physics without GCSE Physics?
Often, yes — strong GCSE Maths/Combined Science helps, and you can bridge any gaps.

What’s the pass mark?
Boundaries vary each year; E is typically around 40–45% overall (but can move).
