Do I Need the Practical Endorsement for A Level Physics?

If you’re taking A Level Physics as a private candidate or via distance learning, you’ve probably heard about the “practical endorsement.”

But what is it — and do you actually need it for your goals?

What Is the Practical Endorsement?

The practical endorsement is a separate certification showing you’ve successfully completed the required hands-on Physics practicals and met the CPAC (Common Practical Assessment Criteria).

In AQA A Level Physics (7408) this is awarded alongside your exam grade and recorded as Pass or Not Classified on your certificate. It does not change your exam grade.

Is the Practical Endorsement Required?

For many UK STEM degrees — especially Physics, Engineering, and related sciences — the endorsement is required or strongly preferred as part of the offer.

If you don’t plan to study a science at university, you may not need it. Always check entry requirements carefully for your target courses.

How Do You Complete the Practical Endorsement?

If you’re studying online, you’ll arrange your practicals at an approved exam centre or specialist lab that accepts private candidates. Places are limited and scheduled on set dates.

  • There is a separate fee for the endorsement; plan this into your budget.
  • Book early — spaces can fill quickly, especially in the spring.

Use the JCQ directory to find centres and confirm they offer Physics practicals to private candidates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I don’t do the practical endorsement?

You still receive an A Level Physics grade, but your certificate shows “Not Classified” for practical skills. This can limit science/engineering university options.

Can I add the practical endorsement later?

Usually, yes — you can complete the endorsement at a later date if required for university. Check availability and scheduling with centres.

How much does it cost?

Fees vary by provider; many charge several hundred pounds (often in the £600–£900 range). See more about exam and practical fees.

How many practicals are there?

AQA specifies a set of required practical activities (commonly delivered as 12) assessed against CPAC to award the endorsement.

I’ve already passed the endorsement — can I carry it forward?

If you previously achieved a Pass, many centres allow it to be carried forward when you re-enter the qualification. Confirm with your chosen centre and AQA.
