Do I need a placement and if so, how do I get one?

To be fully qualified as a teaching assistant you will need to either be working in a school or have access to one for voluntary work. If you are unable to do this, you do have options however, check out the guide to teaching assistant courses and it will explain in full for you.

To obtain a placement/voluntary work in a school you simply have to be pro-active. Approach schools in your area, explaining that you are looking to study a teaching assistant course and you need to be able to do some hours in the classroom. Feedback from students indicates you get a better response when you approach schools in person rather than just call or write but certainly try all avenues. If you have any contacts or know parents with children in a school etc be sure to use them as best you can!
